Karttikeya is a very popular deity in Sri Lanka and the southern states of India, where he is known as Murugan.

In Hindu mythology, there is a story about the untouchable demon Tarakasur, who could only be killed by the son of the god Shiva. Despite of rather ascetic life, Shiva decided to marry Parvati, but she could not get pregnant due to a curse. Therefore, Shiva took her to a cave and asked her to meditate. While they were both meditating, a fireball emerged from their cosmic energies with an energy so powerful not even the god of fire Agni could contain it. Therefore, he gave the fire to the goddess Ganga (Ganges), but even she could not contain it. Finally, he placed the fireball in a pond surrounded by a reed forest. Parvati incarnated in the form of water for she was the only one who could fight this energy. Finally, the fireball began to transform and a newborn child with six faces emerged out of it.

Later in life, Murugan killed the untouchable demon Tarakasura, as the prophecy said, and became commander of the gods.

Karttikeya is depicted as a dark-haired young man with a spear in his hand. He rides a peacock, which expresses his strength.

With the blessings of Karttikeya, we can become much stronger and get rid of sadness and overwhelming anxiety. He also symbolizes courage, discipline, spiritual struggle and victory over inner demons we face. Murugan is also known as destroyer of bad habits and conqueror of sensual desires.
