Mythology & Meaning

Mangala is a Vedic deity associated with the planet Mars. It represents energy, courage, strength, the ability to act and defend oneself, but also anger, impulsiveness and conflict if not properly directed.

Worshipping Mangala’s energy can help harmonize the inner fire – to find courage without aggression, assertiveness without destruction.

According to Vedic tradition, Shiva was once meditating on Mount Kailash when three drops of sweat appeared on his forehead. As they dripped down, a beautiful, red-haired, four-armed child was born from them. Shiva gave the child to the earth goddess Bhumi to raise and teach him. From Bhumi he received the name Bhauma.

When the boy grew up, he made a pilgrimage to the holy city of Kashi to perform a great penance ceremony. Shiva blessed him and gave him the power of Mangala (Mars). Bhauma’s soul and energy have since circulated in the solar system and represent the planet Mars with its power.
